What Questions Should I Ask Before Getting Veneers?

What Questions Should I Ask Before Getting Veneers?

Veneers are one of the most requested cosmetic dental procedures. But most patients walk in with the wrong questions. They ask about the color, the shape, the price. They rarely ask about whether they're a good candidate, what happens to their teeth in the process, or how to keep veneers intact for years.

This post answers the questions that actually matter before you commit.

Are you even a candidate?

This is the first thing to figure out, and most people skip it.

Not everyone qualifies for veneers. At North Pacific Clinic, we screen for four main disqualifiers before anything else:

  • Poor oral hygiene: If you're not keeping your natural teeth clean, veneers will not fix that.
  • Gum disease: Active gum disease needs to be treated first. Full stop.
  • Bad habits: Grinding, nail biting, chewing ice. These habits will destroy veneers faster than anything else.
  • Tooth damage that is too severe: If the structure of the tooth is too compromised, veneers are not the right tool.
A veneer is a cosmetic solution. It requires a healthy foundation.

What actually happens to your teeth?

This is where most patients are caught off guard.

Getting veneers requires removing a layer of your tooth. Depending on the case, that reduction ranges from 0.5mm to 2mm along the incisal edge. That tooth structure does not grow back. Veneers are a permanent commitment, not a reversible cosmetic upgrade.

You need to know this before you sit in the chair.

How long do veneers last, and why do they fail?

Veneers do not last forever. The most common reasons they fail earlier than expected:

  • Gum recession: As the gum line pulls back, it can expose the edge of the veneer and compromise the bond.
  • Fractures: Veneers are durable, but they are not indestructible.
  • Treating them like regular teeth: Patients bite into hard foods, use their teeth as tools, or skip dental visits. Veneers require more care than natural enamel.
The lifespan of your veneers depends almost entirely on how you treat them.

What does it cost?

At North Pacific Clinic, veneers are $425 per tooth. The price can go up if a tooth needs a filling before the veneer is placed. That is a separate procedure and a separate cost.

Budget based on the number of teeth you want treated, and factor in the possibility of preparatory work.

What does a real case look like?

One of our patients came in with heavy staining across 10 teeth. Whitening was not going to get her where she wanted to go. We placed 10 veneers, matched the color to a natural, healthy tone, and the result was a complete smile transformation. No drama. No gimmicks. Just a process done correctly.

That is what veneers are for: cases where the problem is real and the solution fits.

How do you keep veneers in good condition?

This is the question almost nobody asks, and it is the most important one.

Here is what we tell every patient after placement:

  • Eat gently: Avoid hard foods, seeds, and anything that puts sudden pressure on the veneer.
  • Massage your gums: Regular gum massage helps slow recession and keeps the tissue healthy around the veneer.
  • Keep your hygiene consistent: Brush, floss, and show up to your follow-up appointments.

The veneer does not protect your tooth from decay. The tooth underneath still needs care.

What about going cheaper somewhere else?

Veneers done at a lower price point are not necessarily bad. But veneers require follow-up. They can fracture. They need replacement over time. If you got them somewhere with no continuity of care, that follow-up becomes a problem.

The cost of a veneer includes the relationship with your dentist over time, not just the day of placement.

The one thing to know before you decide

Veneers are a permanent solution to a better smile. They work. They look good. But they require you to maintain your hygiene and visit your dentist regularly to make sure the tooth underneath stays healthy.

You are not just buying a cosmetic result. You are taking on a long-term responsibility.

If you are ready for that, veneers are worth it. If you are not sure, start with a consult. At North Pacific Clinic, that conversation is where everything begins.
